The Last Breakfast

The Last Breakfast

Marty’s photo of the day #4796: I spent the morning hanging out my kitchen window—some 25 feet off the ground—photographing and filming the baby robins on their final hour in the nest atop an outdoor speaker. This is their last breakfast. Notice how mom/dad has counted out three berries for three chicks. Minutes after shooting […]

Ready to Fly

Ready to Fly

Robin update: It’s getting crowded. The puppies are ready to fly! For those who haven’t seen my previous posts, there is a robin nest atop a speaker on the tall backside of Deb’s and my house, and I have been periodically hanging out our kitchen window to photograph the chicks. This is the second brood […]

Photographing a Nighthawk

Photographing a Nighthawk

Marty’s photo of the day #4791: This has been the “Year of the Bird” at the Essen Wildlife Refuge. I’ve known for years that we have nighthawks here, but since they’re active at dusk and dawn, I’d only hear their calls and glimpse them zooming through the dark forest. Until yesterday, I’d never had the […]

Patience, Timing, and Luck

Patience, Timing, and Luck

Marty’s photo of the day #4788: Wildlife photography is all about patience, timing, and luck. The robins nesting atop a speaker on the tall backside of Deb’s and my house are on their second brood of chicks this summer. Photographing them means hanging out our kitchen window, and this morning I finally got the shot—actually […]

Pure Joy

Pure Joy

Marty’s photo of the day #4787: I call this photo “Pure Joy.” Deb, Nellie, and I had a picnic last night on the Bitterroot River. Activities included lots of stick keep-away, Nellie’s favorite game. When my wife and I adopted Nellie from the animal shelter nearly five years ago, the dingo in her didn’t like […]

Flying Fox Ambassador

Flying Fox Ambassador

Marty’s photo of the day #4786: “Hi! I’m Annie, a black flying fox. I live at a bat research center in northern Queensland, Australia. My job is to tell people how wonderful flying foxes are and to produce pups, which will be released into the wild. Now, I must get my beauty sleep.”

Robin Chick Update

Robin Chick Update

Robin update: The puppies are doing great! I shot this photo a few minutes ago, and it’s amazing how much they’ve grown in just three days. If you’ve missed the progress on the three robin chicks, starting at the eggs, see my earlier posts.

Up-Close: White-Spotted Sawyer Beetle

Up-Close: White-Spotted Sawyer Beetle

Marty’s photo of the day #4783: One of my favorite things about being a wildlife photographer is showing people animals or aspects of animals they’ve never seen before. So here’s a photo I shot yesterday at the Essen Wildlife Refuge: a super-extreme close-up of a white-spotted sawyer beetle. If possible, view this on something bigger […]

We Have Puppies!

We Have Puppies!

Robin update: We have puppies! I was a day off on my prediction of Wednesday, but two of the three robin chicks hatched this morning. That one egg hasn’t hatched yet is to be expected. Momma robin laid the final egg a day later than the others. More updates to come.
