Marty’s photo of the day #4791: This has been the “Year of the Bird” at the Essen Wildlife Refuge. I’ve known for years that we have nighthawks here, but since they’re active at dusk and dawn, I’d only hear their calls and glimpse them zooming through the dark forest. Until yesterday, I’d never had the […]

Patience, Timing, and Luck
Marty’s photo of the day #4788: Wildlife photography is all about patience, timing, and luck. The robins nesting atop a speaker on the tall backside of Deb’s and my house are on their second brood of chicks this summer. Photographing them means hanging out our kitchen window, and this morning I finally got the shot—actually […]
Pure Joy
Marty’s photo of the day #4787: I call this photo “Pure Joy.” Deb, Nellie, and I had a picnic last night on the Bitterroot River. Activities included lots of stick keep-away, Nellie’s favorite game. When my wife and I adopted Nellie from the animal shelter nearly five years ago, the dingo in her didn’t like […]
Flying Fox Ambassador
Marty’s photo of the day #4786: “Hi! I’m Annie, a black flying fox. I live at a bat research center in northern Queensland, Australia. My job is to tell people how wonderful flying foxes are and to produce pups, which will be released into the wild. Now, I must get my beauty sleep.”
Robin Chick Update
Robin update: The puppies are doing great! I shot this photo a few minutes ago, and it’s amazing how much they’ve grown in just three days. If you’ve missed the progress on the three robin chicks, starting at the eggs, see my earlier posts.
Do You Like My Hat? (Ver 2)
Marty’s photo of the day #4785: “Do you like my hat?” (Photographed in the Everglades, not far from the American Fascist Party’s new internment camp.)
Cape Buffalo
Marty’s photo of the day #4784: This is a Cape buffalo, considered by many to be the most dangerous animal in Africa. Also a popular bird perch. (Photographed in Zimbabwe)
Up-Close: White-Spotted Sawyer Beetle
Marty’s photo of the day #4783: One of my favorite things about being a wildlife photographer is showing people animals or aspects of animals they’ve never seen before. So here’s a photo I shot yesterday at the Essen Wildlife Refuge: a super-extreme close-up of a white-spotted sawyer beetle. If possible, view this on something bigger […]
We Have Puppies!
Robin update: We have puppies! I was a day off on my prediction of Wednesday, but two of the three robin chicks hatched this morning. That one egg hasn’t hatched yet is to be expected. Momma robin laid the final egg a day later than the others. More updates to come.

Concern For People I’ve Met
Marty’s photo of the day #4781: I photographed these Yagua boys back in 2001. While I often wonder about the fate of animals I’ve photographed on all seven continents, now more than ever I also wonder about the people—especially those with brown skin. I hope these now-young-men are safe in Peru. Because if they came […]
Melissa Blue Butterfly
Marty’s photo of the day #4780: This is a Melissa blue butterfly, photographed last week in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana.
Rock God
This is Rock. Rock is a god. He is 100 percent guaranteed to be every bit as real as every other god. In fact, Rock God has many advantages over other gods: 1. Rock God isn’t afraid to show his face in the era of cameras. Anyone can see Rock God. 2. Rock God doesn’t […]
An Everyday Pinecone
Marty’s photo of the day #4779: I shoot a lot of wildlife photos. But as a photographer, I also enjoy picking everyday subjects and photographing them in unique ways. This is a pinecone, photographed earlier this week at the Secret Spot (Montana).
