This is Rock. Rock is a god. He is 100 percent guaranteed to be every bit as real as every other god. In fact, Rock God has many advantages over other gods: 1. Rock God isn’t afraid to show his face in the era of cameras. Anyone can see Rock God. 2. Rock God doesn’t […]

An Everyday Pinecone
Marty’s photo of the day #4779: I shoot a lot of wildlife photos. But as a photographer, I also enjoy picking everyday subjects and photographing them in unique ways. This is a pinecone, photographed earlier this week at the Secret Spot (Montana).

Beargrass Perfection
Marty’s photo of the day #4775: The latest entry in my ongoing mission to find the perfect beargrass specimen. Photographed at Marty and Deb’s Secret Spot, Montana
In Her Arms
Marty’s photo of the day #4774: Imagine walking through a wet tropical forest in Costa Rica, looking up at a jumble of arms and legs—and there he is. A baby howler monkey in his mother’s arms!
Eagle-Sized Mosquitoes and a Woodpecker
Last Week at the Essen Wildlife Refuge: Every Sunday, I try to post the best of the previous week’s photos from my motion-sensing cameras. This week, I refuse to do that because the motion-sensing camera at the lower-level pond is being guarded by ten million eagle-sized mosquitoes. There’s only so much I’m willing to do […]
Looking at You
Marty’s photo of the day #4773: Spruce grouse, photographed at the Essen Wildlife Refuge in Montana.
Castillo de Albuquerque
Marty’s photo of the day #4772: Deb and I spent time in Spain while working on the Europe section of my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents. This is Castillo de Albuquerque, which we discovered by accident while traveling the rural back roads. I’m now reading The Last Queen, the second […]
Another Egg
Robin update: Yesterday, I posted that the robins nesting atop the speaker on the tall back side of Deb’s and my house had laid a second clutch of eggs. Earlier this summer, they raised three chicks, but the second clutch had only two eggs. Then, this morning, mom said, “What the fuck,” and laid a […]
Robin Eggs
Marty’s photo of the day #4770: I spotted the robins, who had raised three chicks earlier this summer, makin’ whoopee. Then, yesterday, two eggs showed up in their nest atop the speaker on the tall back wall of Deb’s and my house. I will follow up in the coming weeks with progress pictures of this […]
The Star Trek Ray
Marty’s photo of the day #4769: Whether I’m exploring a remote rainforest or an ocean reef, I’m often amazed by creatures that resemble something I’ve seen in a Star Trek movie/show. I remember watching this ray off the coast of Belize a few months ago: it rose above the sand and hovered, moved for a […]
Amazon Tree Boa at Night
Mother and Calf Moose
Last Week at the Essen Wildlife Refuge: Some of you may remember my story from back in April, when Deb and I were hiking on the far side of the refuge. Our dog, Nellie, came running towards us with a moose in hot pursuit! My wife and I raced for a cluster of trees, but […]
Adult Antlion
Marty’s photo of the day #4767: I spotted this adult antlion yesterday while I was out walking my dog, Nellie. When it landed on a dead branch it practically disappeared. It’s about an inch-and-a-half long. (Photographed on the Essen Wildlife Refuge, Montana)
The Gentoo Penguin Close-Up
Marty’s photo of the day #4766: Every once in a while, I go back through my Antarctica photos to see if I can find a good one that I haven’t posted before. Found one! This is a gentoo penguin.
Lionfish
Marty’s photo of the day #4765: I photographed two lionfish off the coast of Belize earlier this year. The species is not native to the area, and both were in cloudy water. Even so, after seeing little ones in aquariums it was fun to see much bigger ones in the wild.
The Secret Spot
Marty’s photo of the day #4764: Blue lupines at Deb’s and my Secret Spot. (Photographed somewhere in western Montana that tourists won’t find. We’ll never say where.)
Half-Human Dog
Marty’s photo of the day #4763: It’s time for an artsy shot. I call this: Half-Human Dog with Stogie and Hangover.
