The curious chick
Marty’s photo of the day #2980: We had a strict rule on our Antarctica expedition: we could not approach any animal closer than fifteen feet. The animals, on the other hand, didn’t have such rules, and they could approach us as close as they wanted to. In this photo, a curious gentoo penguin chick has […]
Rainy season kayaking
Marty’s photo of the day #2936: During the rainy season in the Amazon Rainforest, the waters rise practically beyond belief. In this photo, my wife, Deb, and friend Laurel are in a spot that would be solid ground in the dry season. And in many such places, we couldn’t touch bottom with our kayak paddles. […]
Female elephant seals
Marty’s photo of the day #2925: These are female elephant seals, molting. I photographed them on a tiny island off the coast of Antarctica.
Penguins say Happy Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and LGBTQ Pride Month
Marty’s photo of the day #2923: Happy Father’s Day! One thing about penguins is that you can’t easily tell their sex by looks or behavior. Is this really a daddy penguin feeding his chick? Or is it a mommy penguin feeding her chick? I could use this same photo to wish people a Happy Mother’s […]
Iceberg portal
Marty’s photo of the day #2917: Today we go artsy again, with a photo I took looking through an iceberg to a mountain on Antarctica.
To the top of the world!
Marty’s photo of the day #2877: For yesterday’s photo of the day, we were in Antarctica. Today we go from the bottom of the world to the top of the world for this female Lapland longspur that I photographed in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Antarctica tops my list
Marty’s photo of the day #2876: When I speak at colleges, students always ask which of the seven continents I enjoyed visiting the most. When I say “Antarctica,” they’re always surprised. While every continent has its share of amazing physical features, there’s just something about Antarctica’s massive blue icebergs that make the continent extra-special.
Fur seal sparring match
Marty’s photo of the day #2874: I photographed these fur seals on an island off the coast of Antarctica. The day was foggy, still, and quiet. The seals were calm until they saw me. Then they broke into an impromptu sparring match—their roars slicing through the silence. Show-offs!
Leopard Seal
Marty’s photo of the day #2865: Greetings from Bremerton, WA (near Seattle). I have 3:00 pm show today at Olympic College. If you are nearby, come see the show! One of the animals I talk about in “Around the World in 50 Minutes” is a leopard seal. Here’s one that I photographed off the coast […]
Waiting for mom
Marty’s photo of the day #2861: A gentoo penguin chick watches the ocean, waiting for mom or dad to come home. (Photographed on an island off the coast of Antarctica)
Roller coaster at sea
Marty’s photo of the day #2839: In this photo, I’m on the bridge of the Russian ship, the Professor Multanovskiy, sailing between Antarctica and South America. A storm has come up, and we are on a massive roller coaster ride—diving into wave troughs, climbing back atop the crest, and then doing it all over again. […]
Hanging with the penguins
Marty’s photo of the day #2828: Hanging out with the gentoo penguins on one of the many islands off Antarctica’s coast.
The Antarctica coast
Antarctica or Montana?
Marty’s photo of the day #2818: I took this photo a few minutes ago, peering out the back window wall of our house. As you can see looking down the hill, penguins have moved in. Looking down further you can see . . . how did a ship get in my backyard? Okay, I grabbed […]
Iceberg dead ahead!
Marty’s photo of the day #2789: “Iceberg! Dead ahead! Turn! Turn!” (Photographed off the coast of Antarctica—and we didn’t come close to hitting it.)
Why I will never visit Japan
Marty’s photo of the day #2785: I will never visit a country that supports whaling. So no Japan for me! Their withdrawal from the International Whaling Commission to resume commercial whaling for the first time in 31 years is reprehensible. Today’s photo is of an old whaling dinghy, stuck in volcanic ash, on Deception Island, […]
Good morning Antarctica!
Marty’s photo of the day #2782: I was the first person to spot Antarctica—at least on the little ship I was on. At three in the morning, everyone was sleeping but me. I got out of bed and padded onto the bow. The month was February, so this was Antarctica’s summer, and the sky never […]
Antarctica cliff climbing?
Marty’s photo of the day #2777: Anyone for a little cliff-climbing along the coast of Antarctica? But if you fall in, you won’t last long!
Winter should behave like winter
Marty’s photo of the day #2765: Having grown up in Minnesota, I enjoy the cold and snow of winter. Now that I live in Montana, all I ask of winter is that it behave like winter and stay below 32 degrees. But, thanks in large part to more than 30 years of Republican obstruction and […]
