Marty’s photo of the day #4609: This is Fred the Eyelash Viper. He hung out near the door of the cabana my wife and I were renting the entire time I was working on the Costa Rica section of my second book, Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and […]

Macaw Taunts
Marty’s photo of the day #4608: While I was in Costa Rica, the scarlet macaws taunted me, flying by in a flash before I could raise my camera. Then, on the day I was leaving, this one had mercy and landed on a branch just above my head. “Is this close enough?”
Militia in Iquitos
Marty’s photo of the day #4607: If America’s first dictator decides America “Absolutely must have Peru, for security reasons,” the militia in Iquitos is ready to fight!

It’s Molting Time!
Marty’s photo of the day #4603: It’s molting time! This is an adolescent gentoo penguin during her first molt, and she seems rather happy about getting rid of all the chick fuzz. Photographed on a tiny island off the coast of Antarctica.
Not what the GOP claims it is
Marty’s photo of the day #4602: Whenever Republicans take control, they want to head north and “Drill baby, drill.” Therefore, this is my frequent reminder that the Arctic is not the “bunch of nothing” they claim it is. This is a close-up of tundra, north of the Arctic Circle.
Amazon Tree Boa
Marty’s photo of the day #4601: This is an Amazon tree boa, photographed in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru.
Apparently, it’s edible. . . .

Waiting For the Night Heron
Marty’s photo of the day #4598: This is a night heron, photographed last year on the island of Bonaire. Creating this photo required sitting quietly under the trees at a tiny waterhole, waiting for the bird to join me.
Stoplight Parrotfish
Marty’s photo of the day #4597: This is a stoplight parrotfish, photographed off the coast of Bonaire. Aren’t the colors amazing?
Wild Donkeys of Bonaire

Variation Among Species
Marty’s photo of the day #4594: This was a difficult fish to identify because there is much variation among the species. Ultimately, you are looking at a white-spotted filefish that I photographed off the coast of Bonaire.
Leopard in Zimbabwe
Marty’s photo of the day #4593: When I photographed this leopard, the sun had already set, making it quite dark. My photo program allowed me to lighten it up and crop it, but attempts to remove the digital noise reduced the sharpness too much. Still, it’s a leopard in Zimbabwe!
Whipsnake
On a Foggy Antarctica Day
Marty’s photo of the day #4591: Female elephant seals and gentoo penguins, photographed on a foggy day, on a tiny island, off the coast of Antarctica.
A Holy Shit Moment
Marty’s photo of the day #4590: This was a “Holy shit!” moment. Deb and I were out a little deeper than usual, when a massive school of fish suddenly engulfed us. The moment lasted only a few seconds, as tuna were pursuing them in a high-speed chase. Photographed in Bonaire.
