Years ago, I lost all interest in the NBA, but I really enjoy the WNBA—especially the Minnesota Lynx. The talent the women have is amazing, and their version of basketball is uniquely entertaining. It’s also the most politically liberal professional sports league in America. Deb and I stream the Lynx games, and we are often checking out coach Cheryl Reeve to see what political T-shirt she is wearing (she wears a new one every home game).
Of course, many Republicans can’t stand the WNBA: “Oh my God! Some of them are . . . are . . . lesbians!” As if they’d actually have a chance in hell with any of the women, even if they were straight.
That brings me to the latest Republican piece of bullshit. Eleven Republican politicians, led by Congressman August Pfluger of Texas, have written WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert, asking the league to protect Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark from “multiple attacks” on court. These Republicans claim that black players are flagrantly fouling Clark because they are racist.
Yes, fucking Republicans in Congress—who have likely never watched a WNBA game in their lives—are screaming that the black players are racist toward the only white player who’s name they know.
Here’s part of their letter to the WNBA:
“As Commissioner, you have an obligation to ensure that every player competes in a safe and professional environment, both on and off the court, free from violence, discrimination, or retaliation. If discrimination or retaliation is occurring and creating a hostile work environment, we support any appropriate investigation by the Department of Justice, the Department of Labor, or the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. If true, such conduct could constitute violations of federal civil rights laws.”
To be clear, it’s not Caitlin Clark who is screaming racism. It’s fucking snowflake Republicans trying to create a problem that doesn’t exist. What else is new?
The WNBA All-Star game is tonight at 6:30 p.m. (Mountain Time). If you’ve never watched a WNBA game before, you owe it to yourself to check it out. The women are incredibly talented, and the games are so much fun to watch!
