Think about how much religion and its accomplice, conservatism, have held back progress. Science is hundreds of years behind where it would be if it wasn’t stunted by belief in gods invented to control people and stymie critical thinking. Hell, Star Trek and its values might already be a reality.
Even in present time, religion and conservatism screw up the world. In the Middle East, primitive religious-based cultures can’t grow the fuck up and get along. In the United States, religious conservatives disdained masks and vaccinations during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to thousands of unnecessary deaths. Ironically, those same people are perfectly fine with ICE thugs wearing masks.
Religious conservatives also back Donald Trump, who is responsible for more deaths than will ever be accurately counted, is making billions off the presidency, taking from the poor and giving to the rich, and, horrifyingly, boosting fossil fuels while cancelling renewable energy projects. But hey! He was “anointed by God!”
As I write this, massive forest fires are burning around the world. Yet Trump, conservative Christian leaders, Republican politicians, and the ultra-rich are doing everything they can to convince us that human-caused global warming has nothing to do with it. Unfortunately, the cult they have cultivated eats it all up. Our entire planet could burn up, and those unthinking, ignorant people would continue to believe the fiction they are told rather than what science has clearly shown.
The world will always have stupid people. But it sure would be nice if instead of blocking the rest of us, they’d get the fuck out of the way!
