This is Woodena, my new pet tree! She is a rescue tree. My spring project has been to move some of the tiny spruce trees on the far side of the Essen Wildlife Refuge and transplant them along the gravel road that passes by Deb’s and my house. I have been busy watering them and making sure they are happy and comfortable. At the same time, a landslide elsewhere carried Woodena into a ditch, where someone pulled her out and tossed her on the opposite side of the road. Even though Woodena is much bigger than the trees I have been transplanting, I took her home and am trying to save her. Whether she’ll survive is to be determined. She still has a root ball, but her long tap root was amputated.
