Marty’s photo of the day #4222: I have photographed animals all over the world, and when it comes to reptiles and amphibians in remote rainforests, identifications can be sketchy. Generally, I ID animals I don’t already know by typing the location and physical characteristics into Google and going through the photos that come up.
The problem with the island of Borneo is that over the years I’ve posted so many photos from that location on both Facebook and my blog that a good percentage of the photos Google brings up are mine. Today, when I tried to identify this frog, that’s what happened. And it occurred to me that by getting an ID wrong I could be influencing a new generation of Borneo explorers and photographers. So I’m calling this frog a “file-eared tree frog.” I’m reasonably sure I’m right, but if I’m wrong now, and Google keeps recommending my photos, this species could ultimately end up becoming a file-eared tree frog sometime in the future.
