Marty’s photo of the day #4111: For the last month or so, I’ve been exclusively posting photos I took in the United States. It’s time to return to posting photos I took all over the world. I shot this white-lipped tree frog in Queensland, Australia, twenty years ago. At the time, digital photography was in […]

Photographing prairie dogs
Marty’s photo of the day #4110: Last month, in the American Prairie Reserve, I shot almost one hundred prairie dog photos. Ultimately, I will only post two or three of them. Many photos are nearly identical, but since I never use a tripod, a close inspection of a series of shots may have one where […]
Frankenfurter, is that you?
Marty’s photo of the day #4109: No, this isn’t a spaceship from the planet Krichardia, or the giant lips of Dr. Frankenfurter, returning to sing one more time. Instead, it’s a sunset as seen from Antelope Island in Utah. Distant mountains, hidden by smoke, create the optical illusion.
Sunset over the Judith River
Marty’s photo of the day #4108: Deb and Nellie watching the sunset over the Judith River in the American Prairie Reserve. I don’t know what treasure Nellie has in her mouth, but as long as it isn’t elk poop or a bone from some wild animal, we’ll consider it legal.
Walking on water
Marty’s photo of the day #4107: In this photo Nellie and I have a difference of opinion: I’m trying to teach her how to walk on water, but she’d rather we play with the great stick she found! (Photographed on the Judith River in the American Prairie Reserve)
A splash of yellow
Marty’s photo of the day #4106: A splash of yellow, after hiking to the southern tip of Antelope Island.
Pronghorns and antelopes
Marty’s photo of the day #4105: Pronghorns, bison, and coyotes were animals Deb and I saw in both parts of our split American Prairie Reserve (Montana) and Antelope Island (Utah) vacation last month. Of course, the animal in today’s photo, correctly called a pronghorn in Montana, would commonly be called an antelope on Antelope Island. […]
Flowers along the Judith River
Marty’s photo of the day #4104: I photographed these unusual flowers last month, along the Judith River in the American Prairie Reserve (Montana). Note that they have both green and purplish petals. My wife and I went through multiple books and websites that featured Montana wildflowers and couldn’t come up with an ID, but I […]
Pied-billed grebe
Marty’s photo of the day #4103: This is a pied-billed grebe, photographed last month in the Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area (Utah).
The last sunset
Marty’s photo of the day #4102: I shot this photo last month in the American Prairie Reserve of Montana. Nature saved the best sunset of our stay for our last night on the prairie!
High prairie view
Marty’s photo of the day #4101: The prairie is not always flat. I shot this photo last month in the American Prairie Reserve of Montana. Deb (wife), Nellie (dog), and I hiked rolling prairie that climbed up to this magical spot, where we could overlook a valley that we had all to ourselves. The only […]
Hamster guts
Since I became an author and college speaker, newspapers and magazines have published countless stories about my books and college shows, and that doesn’t include opinion pieces and articles I’ve written myself for those publications. I used to save physical copies of all those newspapers and magazines for posterity or something to read in my […]
Dad! Dad! I can herd them!
Marty’s photo of the day #4100: “This is the moment I’ve been training for, Dad! I can herd them. Just tell me where you want them to go!”—Nellie Since Nellie is one-half Australian cattle dog, she practices herding me all the time. But with real live range cows in the American Prairie Reserve, she really, […]
A rare bird sighting?
Marty’s photo of the day #4099: When I saw this bird earlier this month, in Utah’s Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, I was struck by its beauty. I shot multiple photos, but I didn’t think of the bird as a rare sighting. Then, this morning before posting, I consulted various sources to confirm the ID—because […]
Birds vs. Speedboats
Marty’s photo of the day #4098: From where Deb and I live, in Montana, one of the closest major concert venues is the USANA Amphitheater in Salt Lake City. So we’ve found it fun to take three days and mix rock and roll with nature. Six years ago, the concert was Joan Jett, and earlier […]
The sad state of the Great Salt Lake
Marty’s photo of the day #4097: Today I’m going to rip Republicans a new one. Deb and I have visited Antelope Island, located a little outside of Salt Lake City, twice. Both visits were in conjunction with concerts. The first was in late August 2016, as an add-on adventure after seeing Joan Jett; the second […]
Blowin’ grass
Marty’s photo of the day #4096: Earlier this month, Deb and I were sitting near the water in Utah’s Farmington Bay Waterfowl Management Area, waiting for a pod of pelicans to move close enough for a photo. While waiting, this grass, gently blowing in the breeze, presented itself for an artsy picture.
Plateau side-blotched lizard
Marty’s photo of the day #4095: I photographed this plateau side-blotched lizard earlier this month on Antelope Island, in Utah.
Little Dog on the Prairie
Marty’s photo of the day #4094: “The Little Dog on the Prairie.” Okay, at 58 pounds, Nellie is more of a medium-to-large-sized-dog, but you get the point. I shot this photo during a long hike in the American Prairie Reserve, after Deb and I discovered that Nellie could successfully dodge all the cactus and gave […]
Damsel fly on the prairie
Marty’s photo of the day #4093: I shot this photo earlier this month along the Judith River in the American Prairie Reserve. The challenge here was not to spook the damsel fly while achieving focus on a subject perched on a swaying piece of grass.
