I miss live music
Marty’s photo of the day #3373: I miss live music! This is Grace Potter, photographed at the Wilma in Missoula a few years ago. The next concert I plan to attend is Nightwish at the Wiltern in Los Angeles at the beginning of October 2021. Will October 2021 be too soon? I guess it depends […]
Three our of four ain’t bad
Marty’s photo of the day #3372: Soon fall will be here; then a new president; then the end of the COVID-19 pandemic; then the Minnesota Vikings will finally win the Super Bowl. . . . Okay, maybe not that last one.
The intrepid wife
Marty’s photo of the day #3371: Book reviewers frequently call Deb my “intrepid wife.” This photo from Belize captures that thought.
Arctic scenic
Marty’s photo of the day #3369: For this photo, I am standing on a hill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, looking south toward the Brooks Range and the Jago River. Thirty-five miles to the north is the Arctic Ocean, and a day after taking this photo, Deb and I would begin a canoe trip […]
A nature host’s last words
Marty’s photo of the day #3368: From the final episode of The Aussie Hands-on Naturalist, the Animal Planet channel’s latest attempt to recreate the magic of Steve Irwin’s The Crocodile Hunter: “G’day mate! Look at that Sheila. Isn’t she a beauty? Well, I’m just gonna sneak up on her and give her a big ol’ […]
Sedona scenic
Marty’s photo of the day #3367: During a college tour a few years ago, I ended up driving through Sedona, Arizona when a snowstorm hit. The contrast of the white on the red rocks made the already scenic area even more scenic.
Spotted round ray
Marty’s photo of the day #3366: Today we go to the Sea of Cortez in Mexico for a little underwater photography. This is a spotted round ray.
Western sandpipers

Artsy duck
Marty’s photo of the day #3363: Today we go a bit artsy with this female mallard duck. (Photographed in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana)
Sleeping baby owls
Marty’s photo of the day #3362: This is a great horned owl watching over her three chicks. I’ve never seen baby owls sleep this way, but despite looking dead, they are very much alive. (Photographed in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana)
Parque Regional de la Sierra de Gredos
Marty’s photo of the day #3362: One of my favorite hikes in Spain was in Parque Regional de la Sierra de Gredos. Deb and I pretty much had the place to ourselves. Well . . . us and a small herd of Spanish ibex. It was wonderful!
Lions on the prowl
Marty’s photo of the day #3361: Look closely and you’ll see lions on both sides of the Cape buffalo. Overall, five lionesses took part in the hunt. Deb and I watched for about forty-five minutes, but the lions never moved in for a kill. Photographed in Zimbabwe.
American white ibis
Fall in the Yukon Territory
Marty’s photo of the day #3359: Fall is almost here. While many of you have mixed feelings about that, here’s a preview of fall from the Yukon Territory of Canada.
Look closely
Marty’s photo of the day #3358: Look closely—there are two walking sticks in this picture. Photographed in the Amazon Rainforest of Peru.
Adélie penguin
Marty’s photo of the day #3357: This is an Adélie penguin, photographed on an island just off the coast of Antarctica.
And then the hippo bit . . .
Marty’s photo of the day #3356: My sixth book, Hits, Heathens, and Hippos: Stories from an Agent, Activist, and Adventurer, is complete and will be published sometime next year. In that book, I share a hilarious story about Montana’s Democratic Governor Brian Schweitzer “coercing” me into paying way, way too much for a signed Hillary […]
