Marty’s photo of the day #2142: The rare and endangered cactus-climbing starfish was, perhaps, my best find last year while hiking on Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Very few people ever get the chance to see this unusual animal in the wild, as they’re quite shy. Also, as a photographer, I had to approach with caution. Spooking a cactus-climbing starfish can be dangerous, as it will go into “javelin mode” without warning—using all of its arms to pelt would-be predators with cactus spines.
