Marty’s photo of the day #5154: Yesterday, large flocks of migrating Clark’s nutcrackers and evening grosbeaks passed through the Essen Wildlife Refuge. The birds picked at pinecones for a while. Then, when a larger bird circled above, they vanished into the trees. This is a Clark’s nutcracker.
Marty’s photo of the day #2988: Two of these birds visited Deb’s and my house yesterday. We knew they were grosbeaks, but what kind? When Deb couldn’t find the bird in our Audubon field guide, I searched the internet and found a close match at fieldguide.mt.gov. It’s an evening grosbeak in juvenile plumage.
