Comb-crested agamid lizard in Borneo
Marty’s photo of the day #4563: This is a female comb-crested agamid lizard, photographed in the rainforest of Borneo.
Back to safety
Marty’s photo of the day #4551: I photographed these baby orangutans while hiking alone at night on the island of Borneo. They’d been rescued from some shitty thing humans did and then escaped the good humans who would eventually release them into the wild. I made sure they reached safety.
Orangutan in the Wild
Marty’s photo of the day #4465: I shot this orangutan photo back in 2003, when digital photography was still relatively new. I had purchased a Nikon camera for my Borneo trip that promised to be the best of its class. The camera arrived just before I left the United States, and I didn’t have much […]
Elephants in the Rainforest
Marty’s photo of the day #4446: I photographed this mother and baby elephant in the rainforest of Borneo. My camera had a small zoom lens on it, so I wasn’t as close as this looks. Nevertheless, moments after making this image, the mother turned and charged me—causing me to sprint like an Olympic gold medalist.
Orangutan on Borneo
On a rainy night in Borneo
Marty’s photo of the day #4739: You can’t tell, because of the flash, but I photographed this tiny frog on a dark and rainy night, somewhere deep in the rainforest of Borneo.
Iban girl
Marty’s photo of the day #4710: Deb and I met this adorable Iban girl at a longhouse, after our backpacking trip through the rainforest of Borneo.
Watch your hands!
Marty’s photo of the day #4694: I photographed this while backpacking in Borneo. I haven’t identified the species. While it’s probably harmless, it’s still one of the many reasons why Deb and I had to be careful about accidentally touching things during our adventure.

Orangutan find
Marty’s photo of the day #4639: Being that this is photo 4,639, when I go through my photo files each morning to decide what to post, sometimes it’s frustrating finding something of high quality that I haven’t posted before. That’s especially the case when I go through the photos I took while working on my […]

Orangutans and Oil Palm Plantations
Marty’s photos of the day #4565: I photographed this orangutan on the island of Borneo. Orangutans could go extinct in the wild within 30 years, primarily because of oil palm plantations. So I will tell you what I tell students when I speak at colleges: watch your labels and avoid palm oil! You just might […]
Eyeball fungi
Marty’s photo of the day #4553: I’m back in Montana after two performances of “Around the World in 50 Minutes” on two Davidson-Davie Community College campuses (in North Carolina). Both shows went great and both drew way more people than the college expected, so it was happiness all around. After yesterday’s show, I drove straight […]
The six o’clock cicada
Marty’s photo of the day #4452: from the Borneo chapter of Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents: One creature that did follow a schedule was an insect called a “six o’clock cicada.” I was familiar with a variety of cicadas but had no idea an individual species could accurately tell time. According to […]
The pig cobra
Marty’s photo of the day #4417: The following short excerpt is from my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents. For this adventure, Deb and I are on the island of Borneo, and Stephen is our guide from the Dusun Segama tribe: Eventually we rose to our feet and started toward the […]
Gifts for the Iban headman
Marty’s photo of the day #4400: When my wife, Deb, and I explore remote regions of the world, we always bring gifts for the indigenous people. When in the Amazon Rainforest, we bring the children T-shirts, sugar-free gum, bubbles, and harmonicas. In this photo, Deb is presenting a gift to the headman of an Iban […]
Danger, danger, danger!
Marty’s photo of the day #4394: While I’m always respectful of animals, sometimes being a wildlife photographer/writer doesn’t go as planned. Over the years, I’ve been stung by the world’s most venomous insect, bitten by a venomous snake, and attacked by a hippo (the hippo bit through the center of Deb’s and my canoe and […]
The beginning of a great adventure
Marty’s photo of the day #4363: I shot this photo at the beginning of one of Deb’s and my biggest adventures. We were with the Iban tribe (a tribe once famous for headhunting), on the island of Borneo. On the far side of this lake is the AI River (AI means “water” in the Iban […]
