Camp Desolation

Camp Desolation

Marty’s photo of the day #3441: When Deb and I canoed across the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, we found some beautiful places to camp, but as we neared the Arctic Ocean those beautiful spots gave way to hard, barren ground. I named this spot “Camp Desolation.” Our tent is the blue one.

Arctic scenic

Arctic scenic

Marty’s photo of the day #3369: For this photo, I am standing on a hill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, looking south toward the Brooks Range and the Jago River. Thirty-five miles to the north is the Arctic Ocean, and a day after taking this photo, Deb and I would begin a canoe trip […]

Rainforest Boardwalk

Rainforest Boardwalk

Marty’s photo of the day #3305: Here’s and artsy photo that first appeared in my second book, Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico. It’s an old, rotten boardwalk in the Costa Rican rainforest.

Social Distancing or Asshole Guide?

Social Distancing or Asshole Guide?

Marty’s photo of the day #3301: Today’s reality changes how one views photos from the past. For instance, when viewing this photo I took while hiking in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, the thought that likely came to your mind was, “Oh! Look at all that great social distancing!” In reality, it was just our […]

Tundra plant life – extreme

Tundra plant life – extreme

Marty’s photo of the day #3227: Here’s a photo to brighten up your Monday. This is an extreme close-up of tundra plant life, photographed in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. This photo also appears in my second book, Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico.

Zebra longwing butterfly

Marty’s photo of the day #3217: I photographed this zebra longwing butterfly in the Everglades. A slightly different version of this photo appears in my second book, Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico.

Social distancing in the Arctic

Social distancing in the Arctic

Marty’s photo of the day #3213: Deb and I know social distancing! This photo of us was taken several years ago, when we were in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The sun never set the entire time we were there, so this picture could have just as easily been taken at 2:00 p.m. as 2:00 […]

Beware of the tussocks!

Beware of the tussocks!

Marty’s photo of the day #3140: I took this photo while hiking in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Far in the distance (about 30 miles), is the Arctic Ocean. Hiking on the tundra is tricky, because the tussocks (clumps of grass) are unstable, and if you step on them wrong, you can sprain or break […]

Looking way north

Looking way north

Marty’s photo of the day #3097: I took this photo from a tiny airplane on an extremely windy day. We had just lifted off from Barter Island, which is the land mass you see in the middle, and we are about to head south over the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and the Brooks Range. This […]

The Jago River

The Jago River

Marty’s photo of the day #2972: You are looking at the Jago River in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Here the river is frozen, but a few miles to the north, the river drops onto the Arctic Coastal Plain and begins to flow. That’s where Deb and I got into a canoe and paddled the […]

Did I cut the wrong one?

Did I cut the wrong one?

Marty’s photo of the day #2967: As I was finishing up the Costa Rica chapter in my second book, Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico, I had to pick one of two Hecale longwing butterfly photos. This is the shot that got cut. Thinking about it […]

Rainy season kayaking

Rainy season kayaking

Marty’s photo of the day #2936: During the rainy season in the Amazon Rainforest, the waters rise practically beyond belief. In this photo, my wife, Deb, and friend Laurel are in a spot that would be solid ground in the dry season. And in many such places, we couldn’t touch bottom with our kayak paddles. […]
