Marty’s photo of the day #5207: I’ve stepped back while shooting photos of bears and moose, but I never dreamed I’d step back while shooting photos of orca whales. It was early morning on the Johnstone Strait of Vancouver Island. The extreme low tide meant I could walk out onto the newly exposed rocky beach for 70 or more yards. I stood at the edge of the water, listening to unseen orcas on the far side of the strait. Suddenly they changed direction and headed toward where I was standing. There must have been an extreme drop-off just beyond the beach. I stepped back, because they were too close for my lens to focus (I restored the focus in Photoshop), and I was just a little nervous.
