Last Week at the Essen Wildlife Refuge: Some of you may remember my story from back in April, when Deb and I were hiking on the far side of the refuge. Our dog, Nellie, came running towards us with a moose in hot pursuit! My wife and I raced for a cluster of trees, but I didn’t cut fast enough and slammed my shoulder into one as the moose charged by. My shoulder still bothers me, but, obviously, it feels much better than it would’ve if the moose had done the damage instead of the tree.
At the time, Deb and I speculated that the moose had a calf hidden nearby. Fast forward to today’s check of my motion-sensing cameras, and we can confirm that theory. This shot is from the camera closest to where the moose charged us. Mama has a baby!
