Marty’s photo of the day #4796: My wife, Deb’s, college roommates traveled from Minnesota to Montana to spend time with us early last month, and on one of their mornings here, I got them up early and took them hiking in the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge seldom disappoints, and one of my goals was to show them the great horned owls and their babies. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful at finding them.

So yesterday evening, I took Deb and our dog, Nellie, back to the refuge. We enjoyed pizza and beer overlooking the big pond before heading out in search of the owls. This time, I spotted one of the adult owls relatively quickly and shot this photo and dozens of others. Then another photographer walked by and pointed out one of the babies on a log, a short distance away. I also captured stunning closeups of a hoary marmot and a painted turtle.

I will post the baby owl tomorrow and some of the other photos from that evening in the following days.
