Marty’s photo of the day #4996: My general rule for wildlife photo editing is to reject any shot that takes more than a few minutes of work. This one of a spotted eagle ray took longer and is still far from perfect. I’m sharing it mostly for the circumstances behind the photo. Deb and I were kayaking near an island in water that was murky from the sandy bottom and current. I always carry a camera, but this time I only had my backup underwater camera, because I didn’t want to lose my new one if we capsized.
Suddenly six spotted eagle rays were below us. They were difficult to see because of the reflection on the water’s surface. My only option was to hold my camera underwater, point it in the general direction of the eagle rays, and hope the Camera Gods favored me. Considering the shooting and post shooting obstacles, I can’t complain.
(Photographed last month in the Galapagos Islands.)
