Marty’s photo of the day #4465: I shot this orangutan photo back in 2003, when digital photography was still relatively new. I had purchased a Nikon camera for my Borneo trip that promised to be the best of its class. The camera arrived just before I left the United States, and I didn’t have much time to test it out. In the end, the camera was so disappointing that I’ve never bought a Nikon camera again (instead I use Canons). Seeing an orangutan in the wild is an amazing experience, and my wife and I got to spend 15 glorious minutes with this amazing male, deep in the rainforest of Borneo. (You can read the complete story of this in my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.) In the camera’s defense, the lighting in the rainforest was difficult. But still, the photo is full of digital noise. I opened it this morning with a more advanced photo editing program and managed to improve it a little.
