Marty’s photo of the day #4577: Yesterday, I took my dog, Nellie, out for her morning security sweep of the Essen Wildlife Refuge. We followed some shrieking crows to this great gray owl. I hurried back to the house for my camera and captured this image moments before it flew away.

Red-eyed Owl
Marty’s photo of the day #4567: One of the joys of photography is that the camera can see things the human eye can’t. This great gray owl was outside my writing room window. She really doesn’t have a red eye, but I imagine she’s using it to watch a little incel mouse wearing a tiny […]

Great gray owl in flight
Marty’s photo of the day #4790: I had to do a lot to make this photo worthy of posting. This great gray owl was in a tree just outside my second floor writing room window a while back. When the owl suddenly took off, he/she dropped into a dark shadow and the photo turned out […]
Outside my writing room window
Marty’s photo of the day #4593: Yesterday, I posted an in-flight shot of a great gray owl. Today, I’m posting that same owl, perched outside my writing room window. (Photographed in the Bitterroot Valley, Montana.)

In her natural habitat
Marty’s photo of the day #3682: Okay, here’s the fourth and final picture of the immature saw-whet owl that stopped by my house for a visit over the weekend. This time, we see the owl in her natural habitat, after she flew to a tree. She’s not much of a flyer at this stage in […]
The first saw-whet
Marty’s photo of the day #3681: This is the third picture I’m sharing of the immature saw-whet owl that stopped by for a visit over the weekend. In the actual sequence of shots, however, this was the first one I took. I wasn’t going to post this one, but my wife, Deb, walked around all […]
More of the world’s most adorable owl
Marty’s photo of the day #3680: Well, of course, I can’t just post one photo of what could be the world’s most adorable owl! In this one, note how you can see the reflection of the trees in her eyes. For those who missed yesterday’s post, for photo #3679, here is a repeat of the […]
They don’t get any cuter than this!
Marty’s photo of the day #3679: I rarely choose my photo of the day until minutes before posting. That’s because sometimes one of my older photos will fit a current event, sometimes I really have to dig, and other times I haven’t shot the photo yet (that’s the beauty of living in the forest at […]
Evil Owl vs. Silly Owl
Marty’s photo of the day #3488: Evil vs. Silly. Here are the last two photos I’m going to post of the great gray owl that hung out at Deb’s and my house on Saturday. I made these photos near the end of that visit. The owl had moved to the arbor at the back corner […]
Owl adventure Pt 2
Marty’s photo of the day #3487: My writing room is on the second floor of our house, and it features two walls that are mostly windows. The view of the Bitterroot Mountains and the forest below is wonderful, especially at sunrise. Two years ago a great horned owl landed on a branch right outside one […]
