Marty’s photo of the day #4452: My wife, Deb Essen, is one of America’s premier master weavers, and she has a three-book deal with Schiffer Publishing. My first two books, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents” and “Endangered Edens: Exploring the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica, the Everglades, and Puerto Rico, feature […]

Marty’s photo of the day #4451: A four-pack of badgers. Photographed in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana.
African Rock Python
Marty’s photo of the day #4450: This is an eleven-foot-long African rock python. I caught and released this beautiful snake in Zimbabwe while working on my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.
An Elephant in Zimbabwe
Marty’s photo of the day #4449: I photographed this beautiful elephant while backpacking across Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe.
The Baby Howler Monkey
Marty’s photo of the day #4448: I photographed this howler monkey baby in Costa Rica. I love the reaching-out hand. And if you look just beyond the baby’s left ear, you will see part of the mother’s face.
Frogmouth Bird
Elephants in the Rainforest
Marty’s photo of the day #4446: I photographed this mother and baby elephant in the rainforest of Borneo. My camera had a small zoom lens on it, so I wasn’t as close as this looks. Nevertheless, moments after making this image, the mother turned and charged me—causing me to sprint like an Olympic gold medalist.
Penguin Snowflakes
Marty’s photo of the day #4445: I photographed this penguin colony from the top of a glacier on Antarctica. My wife, Deb, and I were just about to climb down when huge snowflakes filled the air. It was magical!
Yukon Porcupine
Marty’s photo of the day #4444: I photographed this porcupine in the Yukon Territory while working on my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.
Caribou by Canoe
Marty’s photo of the day #4443: I photographed this caribou while canoeing across the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.
Nellie and the River
Marty’s photo of the day #4442: Nellie looks like a black lab, but she’s actually half golden retriever and half Australian cattle dog/dingo. When Deb and I adopted her, she didn’t want to have a thing to do with water. But eventually her golden retriever side won out over her Australian side. Now she loves […]
A Pretty Fox
Marty’s photo of the day #4441: Here’s another motion-sensing camera shot from last week on the Essen Wildlife Refuge. This fox lives on the lower level of the refuge, frequently passing by the camera near the seasonal pond.
The Talking Elk
Marty’s photo of the day #4440: Here’s a motion-sensing camera shot from last week on the Essen Wildlife Refuge. The “talking elk” made me laugh and think of some of the weird Republicans on TV with their lip injections.

Mounted Baby Heads
Marty’s photo of the day 4436: This is the Cathedral of Plasencia (Catedral vieja de Plasencia), located in Plasencia, Spain, built in the thirteenth-fourteenth centuries. When in Europe, I enjoy touring old churches. They all feature spectacular architecture, albeit a bit scary. If you enlarge this photo, you will see dozens of baby heads, mounted […]
Orangutan on Borneo
Pelican Wings
Marty’s photo of the day 4434: I photographed this brown pelican several years ago, along the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. The colors aren’t as vibrant as I’d like them to be, as the sun had set, and I really had to push my camera to create anything usable in the twilight. Still, I just […]
Scarlet-rumped Tanager
Marty’s photo of the day 4433: When I was in Costa Rica, I saw this bird for maybe two seconds before it took off. So this photo isn’t as crisp as what I usually post. Nevertheless, it was a new bird sighting for me. It’s a scarlet-rumped tanager.
