Marty’s photo of the day #4618: While working on my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents, Deb and I flew from Montana to Madrid, Spain, and then drove several hours west—all without sleeping. We finally stopped in the tiny town of Arenas de San Pedro, where we found an old hotel right next to a castle.
Exhausted, we climbed into bed—“Bong! Bong! Bong!”—only to be awakened by church bells every hour on the hour! The full story of our comical introduction to Spain is in my Europe chapter.
