Marty’s photo of the day #4659: As anyone who has read my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents, or seen my college show, Around the World in 90 Minutes, knows, my wife, Deb, and I were attacked by a hippo on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. The hippo literally bit through the center of our canoe, lifted us six feet into the air, and tossed us on shore. That experience wasn’t scary (in fact we got up laughing) because it happened so fast. What was scary was continuing in a new canoe the next day, and encountering this hippo and others. I mean, we only had access to a limited number of canoes!

Seriously, I love hippos. The laughing sounds they make crack me up. And the hippo that did attack us was only removing us from its territory the only way it knew how.
