Marty’s photo of the day #4537: Vancouver Island is supposed to have one of the densest populations of black bears in the world. Last month, Deb and I saw two of them on the island, and our dog, Nellie, swears she saw another one not far from our tent. Even so, for us that’s not a big deal, as this summer we’ve had at least four black bears (that I can positively identify) living on the Essen Wildlife Refuge that surrounds our house in Montana.
Instead, what impressed me more was how many bald eagles were on Vancouver Island. Sure, the island is also known for its bald eagles, but being able to find one or more—pretty much at will—was a new experience for me.
This bald eagle landed low on the opposite side of a tree that I was already next to. My challenge was to find a clear view of the bird through all of the branches.
