Marty’s photo of the day #4400: When my wife, Deb, and I explore remote regions of the world, we always bring gifts for the indigenous people. When in the Amazon Rainforest, we bring the children T-shirts, sugar-free gum, bubbles, and harmonicas.
In this photo, Deb is presenting a gift to the headman of an Iban longhouse deep inside the rainforest of Borneo. I don’t remember what was in this particular bag, but Deb carried it in her backpack on our three-day-expedition up mountains, sliding down waterfalls, wading through deep rapids, clinging to sheer mud-cliffs, racing ahead of rapidly rising floodwaters in a narrow canyon during a torrential rainstorm―breaking her toe in the process―and still managed to look pretty damn cute when she finally handed it off.
