Marty’s photo of the day #3938: I photographed this alligator in the Everglades. I spent about an hour, watching this alligator before making this picture. Even so, I was always a safe and respectful distance away, and zoomed in for the shot.

A dog and her toys
Marty’s photo of the day #3936: Nellie is one-half golden retriever and one-half Australian cattle dog (which also makes her one-quarter dingo). Consequently, she is the most intelligent dog Deb and I have ever had, and she requires a lot of mental stimulation. Each morning—no matter what the weather—I take Nellie to an open section […]

The Thinker
Blue-footed booby
Marty’s photo of the day #3933: This is a blue-footed booby, photographed on a tiny island in the Sea of Cortez.
Two for the dog
Marty’s photo of the day #3932: Nellie would like to announce: “I caught two Frisbees at once!” (She didn’t.) and “I’m such a good dog that I deserve two cookies when we go inside.” (Well, okay.)
American white pelican
Marty’s photo of the day #3931: American white pelican, photographed in the backwaters, near the Great Salt Lake in Utah.
A photo for the defiant
Marty’s photo of the day #3930: I shot this photo in Spain, but I think whoever lived here had the same spirit of defiance as the brave people in Ukraine: “Do you think sacking our castle is going to intimidate us into leaving? Fuck you! We’ll build a new one right next to it!”
Central American agouti
Marty’s photo of the day #3929: Central American agoutis are rodents that can weigh up to nine pounds. Some wildlife books claim agoutis resembled guinea pigs, but I see them more as small vegan dogs with buckteeth. (Photographed in Costa Rica)
The kangaroo moment
Marty’s photo of the day #3928: When Deb and I traveled to Queensland, Australia, we happened to visit areas uninhabited by large kangaroos. All we saw were three relocated eastern gray kangaroos that hung around the first place we stayed. So this photo was pretty much our big kangaroo moment. Later, we saw wallabies and […]
Artsy hummingbird
Marty’s photo of the day #3927: Today I go artsy, with a hummingbird I photographed a few summers ago. (Photographed in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana)
(Pretty much) back to normal speaking tour!
Marty’s photo of the day #3927: April will be my most back to normal speaking tour since the start of the pandemic. It includes shows in greater Chicago, greater New York City, and even a return to an old favorite—the Tanglewood Nature Center in upstate New York (where this photo of me with a great […]
It’s the leaders who suck, not . . .
Marty’s photo of the day #3926: I shot this photo of our tiny ship, the Professor Multanovskiy, from the shore of Antarctica. Deb and I selected the Professor Multanovskiy, because it was the smallest ship we could take to Antarctica. Back then, it was cool to be on a Russian ship, and we traveled to […]
Kings of the mountain
Marty’s photo of the day #3925: Kings of the mountain. Bighorn sheep, photographed in southern Idaho.
Rainy season kayaking
Marty’s photo of the day #3924: Deb and I traveled to the Amazon Rainforest of Peru twice—once in the dry season and once in the rainy season. I shot this photo while kayaking through the forest in the rainy season. The water below my kayak was roughly four feet deep. If I were in the […]

A Canadian beauty
Marty’s photo of the day #3921: I photographed this huge elk along the Athabasca River in Alberta, Canada.
