For years Republicans have failed to support the U.S. Postal Service, but it always felt like a game of chicken, where the GOP would eventually back down and give the Postal Service what it needed. If the Postal Service shut down, thousands of businesses that bill their clients through the mail would go out of business, home-bound people wouldn’t get their prescriptions, and so forth. It would be a disaster.
Unfortunately, Donald Trump doesn’t give a shit about anyone other than himself, and he has publicly admitted that Republicans can’t win if enough states make mail-in voting easy. So Trump’s threat to veto the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act if it contains money directed to bail out the Postal Service isn’t a game. He wants the Postal Service to go out of business, because it’s the only way he can suppress enough votes to have a chance to win the 2020 presidential election!
