Marty’s photo of the day #2846: Why am I posting a photo of Deb’s and my feet? If you’ve read my first book, “Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents,” you know. We were only the third outsiders to ever hike deep into a section of Borneo’s rainforest. We lost our guide halfway through the trip (his father died and he had to leave) and were guided the rest of the way by the Iban tribe (reformed headhunters). The Iban headman took us on a “shortcut” down a river that cut a deep, narrow gorge through the mountains. Unfortunately, torrential rain suddenly hit and we had to race down the river before a flash flood washed us away. Deb broke her toe as we ran, and I developed blisters all over my feet (there’s also a stomach turning photo of jungle rash, higher up my body that no one will ever see but me). Deb and I managed to impress the Iban, and though we were totally exhausted and limping for days, neither of us would give up that experience for anything. It’s amazing what a person can do, when the alternative is death.
The feet tell the story
