Whew! I just finished the first draft of the sequel to The Silver Squad: Rebels With Wrinkles. My wife, Deb, has suggested a title, which just might stick: The Silver Squad Rides Again. I started writing in August, but this sequel gave me the worst bouts of writer’s block I’ve ever had.

I kept waiting for the characters to take over my fingers and start typing. Twice I stared at the manuscript for more than a month, not knowing where to take the story. In fact, I almost dumped out to switch to a historical fiction novel that has been perking in my head for the past 20 years.

More than once I said to Deb, “This book sucks!” Then, last month, the characters came alive and speed-typed the second half of the book. It no longer sucks.

For me, the first draft is always the hardest. Now I will spend the rest of the year adding details, vocabulary, humor, and polish. The first Silver Squad novel required 28 drafts to finish, so I still have a long way to go. At least now the frustrating part is behind me, and I’m entering the writing-stage I adore.
