Marty’s photo of the day #3539: For those who have read my just released sixth book, Hits, Heathens, and Hippos: Stories from an Agent, Activist, and Adventurer, this photo says a lot. I took it the day after Deb’s and my backpacking trip on the mountainous island of Borneo with the Iban tribe. When torrential rains hit, we had to race down a river, in a deep canyon, ahead of the flood waters. My feet are covered with blisters and Deb’s second toe on her right foot is broken from one of the many falls she took during that race. You might also notice the cute little birthmark on Deb’s left calf that so fascinated me in the chapter about us meeting for the first time. As for the foot in the far left of the photo? All I can say is that we had an Iban shaman with us at the time. Apparently he made us an extra.
