Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

The deadliest snake?

Marty’s photo of the day #3315: I photographed this fer-de-lance in Costa Rica. Known as the “deadliest snake in the western hemisphere,” it’s not actually the most venomous. Snakes such as the bushmaster have more powerful venom. The fer-de-lance only gets the deadliest title because it blends in with the leaf litter and has the misfortune of getting stepped on a lot. You’d bite too if some giant stepped on you!
