Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

In the eye of a hummingbird

Marty’s photos of the day #2977: Yesterday a calliope hummingbird landed in a tree near where I was standing. I watched her for a moment, then hurried into the house to grab my camera. She was still there when I returned, and I took a few photos before she moved to the garden to feed among the flowers. Eventually she landed and stared at me for several minutes. That’s when I took this photo. If you blew up this image big enough, you could see my reflection in her eye.
