Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

Hippo surprise!

Marty’s photo of the day #2930: Early in our canoe trip down the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe, a hippo bit through the center of Deb’s and my canoe, lifted us six feet into the air, and—like a front end loader—dumped us on shore. Later, with us in a new canoe, more pissed-off hippos like this one popped out of the water to say “hi” at close range. I love hippos, but even after passing 1,500 of them over three days, I never quite got used to their surprise greetings.
