Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

Beach dog: why photos are better than videos

Marty’s photo of the day #2901: While both videos and pictures have their place, if I had to choose, I’d go with the latter. A single photo can bring back so many memories—so many emotions!

This is a photo I took from the yurt Deb and I rented along the Sea of Cortez in Mexico in 2016. Deb would always sleep in, and I would get up a little before sunrise to go on a hike. During our stay, “beach dog” Toby and I became the best of friends. No matter how early I awoke, Toby would be waiting at the door to begin whatever adventure I had in mind. Saying goodbye to Toby when we left Mexico was absolutely heart-wrenching.
