Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

A tiny, epic battle

Marty’s photo of the day #2279: Nature isn’t always pretty. While in Costa Rica, Deb and I witnessed an epic battle between a four-lined ameiva lizard and a large katydid. One wouldn’t expect the katydid to have a chance, but it was obviously releasing some sort of bad-tasting chemical. Each time we thought the lizard would swallow the katydid, he would spit it out and try again. After a bit, we left the two alone. When we checked back later, the katydid was gone, so we assumed the lizard won.
