Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet" and "Endangered Edens."

Are you on the correct side of the road?

Marty’s photo of the day #2054: This is a typical rural road in Queensland, Australia. Note that the pavement (Aussies call it bitumen) is only wide enough for one car. So what happens is that everyone drives down the middle, no matter which way they are going. When two cars meet, they pull to their respective shoulders and go by each other. This works great, until you add an American to the picture. If you are an American and you meet a car, your first instinct is to pull off to the right. If you are an Australian, you correctly pull over to the left, as cars drive on the left side of the road in Australia, not the right. I’m sure numerous head-on collisions have happened because of this.
