Yay! I just finished the first draft of my new novel. My two previous books were nonfiction, so this is my first attempt at fiction. I started the book right after Christmas, with the goal of having the first draft done by the end of May. It’s amazing how much easier it is to write a book after the first one. “Cool Creatures, Hot Planet” took me 13,000 hours to write, and “Endangered Edens” took me 3,000 hours to write. As of today, I have about 800 hours into my new novel, which tells me I’ll come in under 3,000 hours. Considering that my novel will be more than twice as long as Endangered Edens, I’m especially pleased with the progress.
And it’s so strange: I feel like I need to thank my characters for making things go so fast. I never had writer’s block for more than a few minutes, as one or more of the characters would always say to me, “Let’s go this way!” The book is a political-science-fiction-comedy, and I can’t wait for you to meet all the friends in my head that are moving my fingers. With any luck, my novel will be out sometime next year.
