Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet" and "Endangered Edens."

Backpacking with the Iban

Red Ape Trail

Marty’s photo of the day #2027: For those who have read my book “Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents,” this is where Deb and I started the most challenging trek of our lives. We were on the island of Borneo, with the Iban tribe (once famous for headhunting). After journeying up a river in longboats, we got out here and started backpacking. Directly ahead is the start of the Red Ape Trail, which is an old Iban hunting trail. Deb and I were only the third outsiders to ever hike the trail.
