The Pepé Le Pew of deer

Mule Deer

Marty’s photo of the day #1856: When Deb and I moved to Montana, twenty years ago, we had a large herd of mule deer living by our house. Several years later, the “mulies” disappeared and haven’t returned. If you are unfamiliar with mule deer, their most distinctive feature is that they hop, like the cartoon character Pepé Le Pew, instead of run, like white-tailed deer.

Consequently, Deb and I especially enjoyed our encounter with this mule deer in southwestern Montana last weekend. And I think she enjoyed us as well. At the very least she was curious. She watched us for several minutes, and after we walked by, she moved to the side and continued to spy on us from a different vantage point. What a beautiful animal!
