Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet," "Endangered Edens," and the "Time Is Irreverent" series.

Scarlet Macaw

Marty’s photo of the day #1833: I feature this scarlet macaw photo in my new book “Endangered Edens,” and here’s some of the information about the bird I include in the pages:

Although not quite an endangered species, both the illegal pet trade and habitat fragmentation have reduced their numbers. Luckily for the parrots, they are a charismatic species, and the same appeal that spurs illegal pet trade demand also spurs counteraction with conservation and captive breeding-and-release programs. That may not be ideal for intelligent, long-lived birds like macaws, but it sure beats extinction.
