The Orchid-Mimic Spider

Orchid-Mimic Spider

Marty’s photo of the day #1763: It’s “CC, HP: ESC Month,” featuring photos and excerpts from my first book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.

Today’s photo is from the Amazon Rainforest. This is an orchid-mimic spider, which we found inside the flower of a white orchid. It’s quite possible that I was the first person in the world to photograph this spider and publish it. Later, this species of spider showed up in another book—obviously published by some hack author/photographer who had no sense of originality. Come on man; get your own spider!

Just so you know, I photographed this species and published it in 2008. Great photo! I don’t think we know the exact species.

Thanks for commenting, Erik. I appreciate you visiting my blog! Although I posted the spider photo here in 2016, I actually took it on a 2001 expedition and ultimately published it in my 2007 book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents.
