Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet" and "Endangered Edens."

Deb Essen: Weaving with the Iban

Deb Essen

The March/April issue of Handwoven magazine might as well be called the “Deb Essen” issue, as she wrote two of the feature articles in it. I know nothing about weaving, but I contributed the photos for her “Weaving with the Iban” article.

For those who have read my book, Cool Creatures, Hot Planet: Exploring the Seven Continents, you will recognize the Iban tribe from my Borneo chapter. This is Deb’s take on our stay with the Iban. It takes place the day after our arduous backpacking trip through the mountains and our race through the torrential rains, ahead of an oncoming flash flood. As life slowed down, she spent an afternoon learning Iban weaving techniques. To read Deb’s fascinating article, pick up the new Handwoven magazine at your local bookstore or magazine stand.
