Marty’s photo of the day #1593: It’s Halloween, so of course we have to have bats. When Deb and I were in Costa Rica, we hiked out to a tiny abandoned farmhouse in the rainforest. It was filled with bats. Photographing the bats was difficult, because I didn’t have any light to help with the focusing, the bats were very close, and no matter how brave you are, it’s difficult to hold still with bats flying around your head. I got one absolutely magical shot that will be in my new book, Endangered Edens, but this one—which didn’t make the book—is kind of fun too. These are Seba’s short-tailed bats.
