Nature photography, political rants, and Martyman laughs from the ten-time award-winning author of "Cool Creatures, Hot Planet" and "Endangered Edens."

The longest land migration in action

Caribou Migration

Marty’s photo of the day #1521: You are looking at more than just a pretty landscape. If you look closely, you will see what appears to be a long string of dots. Those are members of the Porcupine caribou herd. This herd partakes in the longest migration of any land animal on earth: 700+ miles. In the spring, they migrate to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska. Since I took this photo in the fall, they are returning to their wintering grounds in Canada. (Photographed in the Northwest Territories)
