Annie, my white Labrador retriever, was the best dog I’ve ever had. Those who have read the Afterword of my first book know all about her. Annie stayed by my side for the entire 12,000 hours it took me to write Cool Creatures, Hot Planet and died of cancer on the day I finished the manuscript. Annie has been dead for nine years now, but every once in a while I get a reminder of the impact she had.
Today’s reminder came in a letter from the ACLU, addressed to Annie Essen. In bold on the outside of the envelope it said: “They’re using religion to discriminate. YOU CAN STOP THEM.” I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
